For a paper: Every week we complete a project according to a brief. This week’s was, briefly: sell second-hand style. This is a very abridged version.
My mother has always been independent. She is self-possessed, capable, and confident. These pants were an accessory to that. Like glasses on a smart person, they gave an impression of the truth. These 1980s power suit pants saw her through her days as a Political Science major and her nights as a DJ on the Wellington airwaves, and always helped her stay on the cutting edge of cool.
An item of second-hand clothing is not unused and uncared-for; it has a history. When a garment leaves its owner, it does so because it has served its purpose, and is off to find another person to work its magic on. When you buy a second-hand style, you’re buying your own, first-hand history.
